Sabbatical bzw. - wenn es sich um ein ganzes Jahr handelt, was häufig der Fall ist - Sabbatjahr ist die Möglichkeit, über eine längere Zeit "auszusteigen". In der Regel erhält man in den Jahren vorher ein entsprechend geringeres Gehalt, so dass man dann während des Sabbatical auch Geld bekommt. Sabbaticals sind in vielen Bereichen möglich - mit "Forschung" oder dergleichen haben sie nichts zu tun.

Explanation:
Sabbatical ist meist das Forschungsjahr, in dem man noch in seinem Fachgebiet tätig ist, eben forscht und das andere ist eine Pause, die man beruflich einlegt, um sich eben nicht mit den beruflichen Dingen zu befassen, sondern meist mit privaten Angelegenheit oder weiterbildenden Massnahmen, die eventuell nichts mit dem derzeitigen Beruf zu tun haben. So verstehe ich das jedenfalls.

Explanation:
Mittlerweile ist im Deutschen der Begriff "Sabbatjahr" ziemlich fest ebtabliert, und zwar längst nicht nur im Forschungs- und Lehrbetrieb. Aber wenn die Auszeit nicht ein Jahr, sondern (meistens) kürzer dauert, ist "Sabbatjahr" ungenau.
"Auszeit" halte ich für neutral und verständlich, und es kann bei Bedarf näher spezifiziert werden.

agree  Aniello Scognamiglio (X): "Auszeit" passt am besten (2 Monate, 6, 9, egal...)! Wenn das in CVs steht, sollte es allerdings gut begründet sein, z.B. "Ich wollte noch Hindi und Bengali vor Ort lernen".
