"His distrust of the press was palpable. In what can only be described as a ***gesture***, he had wrapped his face in plastic wrap, S&M style, and grinned broadly for his Ellis portrait."

This is from a book. Can it be that there is missing something before "gesture"? A word like "vulgar" for example? Or would that meaning be implicit in this case?
