English term or phrase: swipe
Swipe is defined in Webster’s as “to strike or wipe with a sweeping motion”.
Swipe is now used to describe the sweeping action made when passing a credit card through a reading device. When the finger touches the center part of a sensor pad and is moved towards the outer part of the pad while keeping contact with the pad, the unit receives a certain command. The movement must be rapid for the command to be received correctly. This is a new way of giving commands to equipment, so I either need to create a new word or attach a slightly different meaning to an existing word.

ziehen ODER durchziehen

Explanation:
Hi Karsten,

in the given context the word you are looking for is "durchziehen". If you look at a filling station using card-o-mats, it will say something like "Schieben Sie Ihre Karte ganz in den Schlitz ein und ziehen Sie die Karte zügig wieder heraus."
For card-keyboards or swipe terminals it says "Ziehen Sie die Karte durch den Leseschlitz"

durchziehen

Explanation:
I don't think 'Ziehen' works, rather 'durchziehen' does, as also suggested. Here is the Austrian VISA web site that uses this terminology: <http://www.visa.at/vp/pos/pos6.html>. As for the noun, 'das Durchziehen' is the best I can come up with.
