Häuptling Explanation: This is the correct translation according to Langenscheidt and Duden/Oxford but the term has been used in so many derogative and humorous contexts that some might be offended. I do not know of any substitute though. - HTH - Dan |

Stammesoberhaupt or Stammeshaupt Explanation: Dan's right; Häuptling carries an almost derogatory connotation. It would depend entirely on your context whether or not you could use "Häuptling". Stammeshaupt or Stammesoberhaupt is a somewhat clumsy expression, but more "politically correct". HTH |
