The Arctic Polar Zoo, just outside Narvik in Norwegian Lapland, is the only zoo in the world where semi-socialised wolves and human visitors are allowed to mingle. In such a ‘woke’ nation as Norway, the irony isn’t lost on me that this is one of the last places on earth where a wolf whistle really is the only way to attract the attention of these incredible, and surprisingly tactile, beasts.

Es handelt sich um eine Reisemagazin. Hat jemand eine Ahnung, was hier mit "woke" gemeint ist? Bezieht sich die Anspielung auf irgendetwas Kulturelles aus Norwegen, von dem ich offensichtlich keine Ahnung habe? Ich komme einfach nicht weiter bei dem Satz ...

Der Begriff "woke" wird seit einigen Jahren in nordamerikanischen Diskursen immer häufiger verwendet. Schwer zu übersetzen, aber bedeutet in etwa: eine Person oder Institution, die sich der durch Rasse, Klasse oder Geschlecht bedingten sozialen Ungerechtigkeiten bewusst ist.

(Die skandinavischen Staaten gelten in den USA gemeinhin als besonders fortschrittlich und aufgeklärt.)

agree  Thomas Pfann: Das könnte gut passen. Und wo man progressiv ist, pfeift niemand den Frauen hinterher („wolf whistling“) – das hier noch einzubauen, ist aber nicht ganz einfach.

Vielleicht im Sinne von "Gerade in einem/r (scheinbar?) so (umwelt)bewussten Land/Nation wie Norwegen ..."?

Dass das Wort in Anführungsstrichen steht, macht es auch nicht einfacher.

neutral  MoSpa: Umwelt eher nicht, da sich wolf whistling auf einen sozialen/feministischen Diskurs bezieht.
