modal έχει την έννοια του "τροπικού" δηλ. ενός συγκεκριμένου τρόπου
Το Concise Oxford English Dictionary αναφέρει:

"relating to mode or form as opposed to substance"
Οπότε:
"A modal screen is one in which all other areas of the system are disabled"
"Η (μία) οθόνη τροποποίησης είναι αυτή εις την οποία όλες οι άλλες περιοχές του συστήματος μπορούν να απενεργοποιηθούν. "

Εάν πρόκειται για λογισμικό και αναφέρεται σε κάποιο "παράθυρο εντολών" ίσως μπορούσε να χρησιμοποιηθεί και το "πλαίσιο τροποποίησης"
