The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development (United Nations, 1992), enhanced the definition of sustainable development with the establishment of 18 principles of sustainability.

As is stated in the Human Development approach, and the main international organisations in the field of the development recognize (United Nations, World Bank…), development is more than economic growth. Regarding to this, to be sustainable, economic development:

 Can not overlook environmental issues or be based on the destruction of natural resources.
 Can not be achieved without an analogous development of social resources
 Must consider the needs of future generations
 Will involves the development and diffusion of more respectful technologies with the environment
 Must consider the needs of all species and the conservation of natural resources
 Must ensure to all people the same level of access to resources
