After having summarised Plato’s treatment of the negations of nouns, concerning opposition, the philosophical problem tackled by Aristotle is that of investigating the negations not of nouns but of modal contexts, i.e. of sentences where the subject-predicate articulation, (like in “Socrates is mortal”) is modulated (often by an adverb): like in “Socrates is necessarily mortal” (or equivalently: “it is necessary that Socrates be mortal”), or “Socrates is probably wise”, etc.
