This metaphor focuses our attention on the potentially political aspects of representations of sociologists that students hold. As Berger puts it, "although every image embodies a way of seeing, our perceptions or appreciation of an image depends also upon our own way of seeing". Prior research has shown that bodies can become uniquely visible in photographic modes of anthropometric analysis, comic strips, more traditional artistic media and advertisements. These images of bodies can have different meanings depending on the context and objective of the persons depicting or viewing them. For example, anthropological photographers and cultural studies scholars note the ways in which photographs reveal the embodiment of culture, as natives' bodies become displays that are dressed and situated in ways that "preserve" cultures throughout the process of colonization. Similarly, racialized and gendered images serve many purposes by presenting bodies as sexualized, dangerous or innocuous. In this analysis, as we detail below, we interpret the drawings and texts from the perspective of academic sociologists who have concerns about gender inequity.
We take up the task of "doing sociology visually" b y empirically examining the potential advantages and disadvantages of iconic information by comparing drawings and text. Icons in the form of drawings are uniquely useful for doing sociology visually, since drawings readily depict bodies and bodies reveal stereotypes. In doing this, however, we must account for some of the peculiarities of this method.
