We asked for drawings and textual replies in a variety of undergraduate sociology classes at a large, western, state university between the fall of 1999 and the fall of 2000. One or both of the authors administered the exercise, usually in the first or last ten minutes of the class period. We collected the drawings by asking students to take out a blank sheet of paper and write their sex, number of years in college and major(s) at the top of the paper. Then we asked them to "draw a sociologist", or alternately, to "draw a sociologist at work" (adopted from Chambers 1983). We elicited the written responses by passing out forms on which students checked off their sex and filled in their age, major(s) and number of years in school. The instructions on the form asked: "Please complete the following statement in your own words. Write at least a full paragraph, but do not write more than a page". The statement, adopted from Mead and M└traux (1957), read "When I think about a sociologist, I think of´".
