ANALYZING THE DATA

Both drawings and textual accounts lend themselves well to content analysis. We used both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Quantitatively, we examined themes, symbols and other icons within our data. Quantitatively, we determined the frequencies with which these appeared. We created a series of codes for the drawings, beginning with the sex of the respondent. Then, using a loose version of "grounded theory", we sorted the drawings according to similarity of image. Through several iterations, we derived five categories: Sociologists at work include representations of people reading books, working at computers, pondering the nature of the social world, conducting interviews, or generally observing the social world. Deviant sociologists include characterizations of punks, hippies or abusive drinkers and drug users. Images of General Sociologists include sociologists that are neither clearly working nor doing anything deviant, although their styles of dress are quite interesting. Drawings of the Specific Sociologists in the Department contain specific clues in appearance, subject matter, or behavior and some used captions. Ambiguous Images of Sociologists sometimes look like popular cartoon characters, microscopic organisms, animals or abstract symbols such as hearts, flowers and trees.
