Προφανώς, αναφέρεται στους τρόπους με τους οποίους κατασκευάζονται σε επίπεδο κουλτούρας οι ταυτότητες και οι εικόνες των εργαζομένων. Το workers εδώ υποψιάζομαι ότι δεν αναφέρεται σε εργάτες μόνο, αλλά στους εργαζόμενους εν γένει.

Όταν μιλάμε για making-up, νοείται η κατασκευή μιας ταυτότητας μέσα στα πλαίσια μιας συγκεκριμένης κουλτούρας, π.χ. ο μάνατζερ στην Ελλάδα, όπως προβάλλεται και δημιουργείται η εικόνα του από τα μήντια, δουλεύει 12 ώρες το 24ωρο, έχει ακριβό αμάξι, σπίτι στη Βούλα ή τη Γλυφάδα (άντε και Κηφισιά), κάνει ράφτινγκ και ιστιοπλοία, πάει διακοπές στη Μύκονο και τη Νέα Υόρκη κλπ κλπ.

Αυτό είναι μόνο ένα παράδειγμα.

In recent years, organizational and political debates have accorded a privileged position to enterprise as holding the promise for both corporate and individual development. In several publications, Paul du Gay has articulated a persuasive analysis and critique of the enterprise discourse; he and a number of collaborators have analysed the various managerial discourses and techniques through which employees are reimagined as entrepreneurs, and organizations are to move from dysfunctional bureaucracies to models of excellence. Whilst we share du Gay's critical position towards enterprise and the Foucauldian tradition upon which he draws, we feel that his analysis suffers from several flaws which we articulate around three themes. Firstly, we argue that du Gay's analysis claims too much for enterprise, and relies on a flawed dualism between enterprise and bureaucracy; secondly, we feel that his analysis is over-deterministic and makes too little space for resistance and alternative discourses to enterprise; finally, we suggest that du Gay has presented the same arguments too often and that his work is implicated in the constitution of the enterprise discourse as an accomplished fact within the academic community.

The book does this through an engagement with a range of work in the social sciences, humanities and in organization studies which privileges the business of description over metaphysical speculation and epochalist assertion.

At the heart of the book is an approach to the material-cultural making up of ‘persons’ that involves a shift away from general social and cultural accounts concerning the formation of ‘subjectivity’ and ‘identity’ towards an understanding of the specific forms of personhood that individuals acquire through their immersion in and subjection to particular normative and technical regimes of conduct.
