English term or phrase: control the gaze
"Behind the one- way mirror, in an adjacent room stood the executioner (whether man or woman, or more than one, no one would tell me), who would, upon a signal from tha warden, activate the death device.
That one-way mirror marks the boundary between victim and executioner, physically separating them while allowing the executioner to control the gaze. Unseen and anonymous, the executioner loses alla personality and virtually melds into the machinery itself. The ralationship between the condemned and the appartus of death the human ralation between the victim and the executioner."

Greek translation:να ελέγχει το βλέμμα
Explanation:

I agree with Loucia\'s angle, which I may not have made clear in my explanation (although I stand by my translation) -- what I meant is that it is the executioner who is allowed to decide where and when to look, as opposed to the prisoner.

Thanks!

Explanation:
The victim is the 'subject' of the gaze. The executioner controls the gaze. That is, he is looking without being seen. To control the gaze implies possession and power and might be further related to the concept of 'point of view'.
The gaze theory was introduced by Laura Mulvey in "Visyal Pleasure and the Narrative Cinema"

neutral  Maria Karra: I agree with what you're saying about "possession", but I don't see how αθέατος παρατηρητής/ μάρτυρας conveys that notion. So I think you got it, I just don't agree with the Greek rendition.
