The Reflective Practitioner

Thanks all for this amazing discussion, yet unseen in ProZ Hebrew.
The main point in my book is that the leader should learn from his/her experiences as they unfold. Obviously, s/he will have to examine everything else contributing to the situation, but the point is that s/he observes his/her actions and learns his/her lessons accordingly in order to improve in the future.
Therefore, I am going to cling to the elegant
המקצוען הבוחן את עצמו
and may replace it with
איש המקצוע הבוחן את עצמו
if it wasn't so cumbersome.
We're talking leaders, so מקצוען is definitely right.

In the quote you provided it says: "...an effort to show precisely how ”reflection-in-action” works... how... it might be fostered in future professionals...".

</br>These are two things: 1. an examination of an "action" performed by certain individuals (namely professionals), and 2. how can this action be taught to others.</br>
So, "the reflective professional" you asked for, is איש מקצוע who uses innate abilities/knowledge to solve problems. <br>

To conclude, I would say: איש מקצוע רפלקטיבי, OR מקצוען מתבונן, except מתבונן is lacking the subject of התבוננות - what is he מתבונן at?

גם אם נכון שהפתרונות לפי גישה זו מקורם במאגר הידע של איש המקצוע,
הרי המקצוען / המומחה הנ"ל אינו בוחן רק את עצמו ואפילו לא בעיקר את עצמו.
לצורך האלתור האמור הוא שוקל ומעיין בכל הסיטואציה בתחום עיסוקו -
הסביבה, המטופל וגם מקומו שלו ביחס אליהם.

"Reflective" (even in this context) is not necessarily "introspective".
WEBSTER: "Reflective: Capable of exercising thought or judgment".

What's important is that the reflection (mind processes and conclusions) occurs within the practitioner (as opposed to learned from others) - NOT that he/she reflect about themselves!

That's why I'd shorten it up to:
המקצוען הבוחן (with or without some ellaboration on the side),
המקצוען המתבונן
המקצוען המעיין
המקצוען המתחקר

And why מקצוען?
Because in the clause you provided about the book, the word "professional" is used repetedly.

i would think that the reason it is hard to decide between the two is that it does not fully capture the meaning, how about מומחה
It reminds me of
"פינת הכר את המומחה
" from the גששים .... concerning the זרבובית- does anyone heard it?

I never do a word-for-word, especially not in books...
This should be a short noun group, though, so we must have an a noun and an adjective. That's why
המקצוען הבוחן את עצמו
works so well here.

Must it be a "word-for-word" trans.?
Is it not possible to say: אדם הבוחן את עצמו בעבודתו, או בזמן אמת

I'm now quite happy with
הבוחן את עצמו
and can't decide between
מקצוען ואיש מקצוע
because "practitioner" is indeed a pain in the bum.

Per your suggestion, I agree with בוחן את עצמו, but מקצוען doesn't really sit well with me.

This is really what it means in this context; no one mentioned
בוחן את עצמו
but I think that's what it is. "Practitioner" is a bigger problem here...

I've found the "non-word" פרקטיקאי used on the web, together with רפלקטיבי makes: פרקטיקאי רפלקטיבי which is not really Hebrew, but completely understandable in Hebrew.
