chaturanga
चतुर् + अंग = चतुरंग

Explanation:
चतुर् means four and अंग means part.
According to the Sanskrit-English dictionary of V. S. Apte, in compunds, the र् of चतुर् is changed to a visarga (which, in some cases becomes स् , ष् or remains unchanged) before words begining with a hard consonant.
Semantics: चतुरंग means that which has 4 parts, that which is quadripartite. It also means a complete army consisting of elephants, chariots, cavalry, and infantry.
Etymology: The चतुरंग of the real-world battlefield, when it descended on the board of a game, became चतुरंग > शतरंज
