8.4.2 Laboratory Procedure for the Glass Transition of Nylon
In this experiment, you will use a torsion pendulum similar to that shown in Fig. 8-2. The nylon fiber specimen is a tennis racquet string (provided by the Downtown Athletic store) about 20 cm long. The fiber is fixed at the top, and attached to the pendulum cross arm at the bottom. The pendulum is set in motion by turning the cross arm slightly, then releasing it. Rather than swinging like a traditional pendulum, the torsion pendulum exhibits rotational oscillations that are gradually damped out as the pendulum loses energy. When the pendulum twists, the total energy of the pendulum is alternately stored as rotational (kinetic) energy of the cross arm and elastic strain (potential) energy in the fiber. Energy is lost in several ways, but mainly by dissipative processes in the fiber. By measuring the frequency of oscillation and the energy loss per cycle, the properties of the nylon fiber can be deduced. The property associated with storage of strain energy is called the STORAGE MODULUS, and the property associated with damping is called the LOSS MODULUS. The pendulum geometry is illustrated in Fig. 8-2 where the M symbol indicates the mirror and the W symbols indicate weights.
