Architecture / Venezia
English term or phrase: guildhalls
This city, La Serenissima, is a good metaphor for everything this
history of writing has been about. Like the city’s occupants, writing
finds many employments and has done for centuries. As the new day
dawned in the 1500s, lawyers reached into the muniments chest and
took out their papers, merchants heaved huge ledgers off the shelves,
schoolchildren placed their writing materials in bags to take to school,
cooks and shoppers of all kinds drew up lists and ticked off purchases,
mariners unrolled their charts, musicians unfolded their scores, and the
clergy of St Mark’s creaked open elderly manuscripts to chant from
– as they do, much the same, to this day. On the tombs of Titian and
the Doges of Venice incised letters catch the light; around the Bellini
in the Frari letters gleam in the golden mosaic above the Virgin. In
the homes and GUILDHALLS of the city citizens debate and vote, love and
hate. Today, tourists add another layer of paper documents: tickets
and passports, hotel bookings, credit cards, receipts; the guidebooks
and maps they unfold, the posters that draw them to exhibitions. This
is the world of the written word; all happening simultaneously; all
coexisting – the credit card in the machine in the shops by the Rialto,
with Sanvito’s books in the Marciana.

Scole/Scuole
Explanation:

One of the six great Guildhalls of Venice, today it is part of the Civil Hospital.
Built originally in 1260 for religious and humanitarian purposes, and rebuilt following a fire, the guildhall owes its very beautifully decorated marble facade to Pietro Lombardo who worked on it between 1485 and 1494.
