in questo caso background sembra la risposta dello strumento in assenza di segnale. Oppure potrebbe essere il fondo (fisico) dello strumento. Chiedo anch'io, cosa c'e' in figura 8.18?

la didascalia della figura 8.18 mi fa pensare che si tratti proprio della risposta dello strumento in assenza di segnale esterno
