The ECM mode is an ***error request repeat method communication*** defined by ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union). As Faxes equipped with the ECM mode communicate by checking if the sent data has an error, they can prevent image blurring by the noise on the phone line. When there are a lot of noises, communication time may be slightly longer than it is when ECM OFF is selected. This machine automatically returns to the ECM ON status when it completes transmission

...in caso di errore. Mi sto forse arrampicando sugli specchi, ma ho cercato di seguire un ragionamento partendo dal presupposto che la frase sia corretta. In questo caso, communication è il sintagma nominale, e si riferisce agli standard stabiliti da ITU-T. Andando a ritroso, troviamo i vari "aggettivi" di communication: request repeat method è il metodo di ripetizione su richiesta, sulla falsariga dell'espressione request program=programma (di brani) su richiesta. Mi pare che così abbia un senso rispetto all contesto...cioè, in caso di errori nella trasmissione dei dati, è possibile ripetere la richiesta di trasmissione.
