Normalmente hardness scale dovrebbe essere la "scala di durezza", ma in questo contesto mi pare si tratti di incrostazioni (incrostazioni dure). E nella frase "....it contains hardness..." avranno sottinteso "scale"? Quindi anche in questo caso "incrostazioni"??

PS: anche a me, a prima vista, il termine aveva dato l'impressione di indicare la "scala di durezza", ma poi, leggendo il contesto, ho capito che si trattava di tutt'altro.
