una possibilità, per il tuo contesto, è forse quella girare la frase al negativo - quello che ho scritto è solo un esempio, ovviamente, che può benissimo risultare troppo colloquiale per il tuo complessivo contesto; ma forse può suggerirti qualche idea migliore.

Forse vale la pena di notare, comunque, che "better off" non è che il comparativo di "well-off", che spesso viene tradotto con "benestante", cui mi pare corrispondere abbastanza bene, anche nella derivazione etimologica; lo star bene di cui si tratta quindi si riferisce in primo luogo alle condizioni economiche, come suggerisce, al di là del momento di distrazione, la proposta di Ivana.
