English term or phrase: by default
How could the ousting of Saddam Hussein be woven into something called the "war on terror?" Up ahead would be more definitions by default.

By default è riferito al'espressione "guerra al terrore". Più sopra si dice che il significato dell'espressione cambiava a seconda dei contesti ed era definito soprattutto "dicendo ciò che non era". Come rendere dunque "by default"?

Explanation:
This is a bit tricky--the word default is not exactly the best choice here in English. Default literally means:

an option that is selected automatically unless an alternative is specified

But then the writer goes on to say that there would be other definitions by default (so there are other options here).

I would probably put the sentence in Italian this way, because a better choice in English for this sentence would have been to say "Up ahead there would be more definitions that would be taken at face value (taken for granted=per scontato)"

Più avanti ci sarebbero state più definizioni date per scontato.

-> Thanks Laura, and your idea of adding the word ovvie makes the sentence clearer in Italian.

Explanation:
In filosofia si parla spesso di definizioni negative o concetti negativi. Quando si definisce qualcosa spiegando quello che questa cosa non è.
Esempio: la libertà è non trovarsi in una situazione di prigionia.
Il bene è non commettere il male.....
D'altra parte in default of vuol dire in assenza di, no? (ovviamente è un puro riferimento linguistico, nulla di semantico)
