avere fede (fiducia)/riporre fiducia (in qualcosa/qualcuno)
Explanation:
Una delle altre alternative possibili.

"XXX ebbe fede (fiducia) in noi /ripose fiducia in noi" .

Explanation:
gives the same idea in a well-known Italian expression
the idea is that you can't see the future (because it's dark), but you decide to "jump" anyway

neutral  giogi: As far as I know "un salto nel buio" is "a leap in the dark", and the connotation is a bitdifferent in Italian

-> I understand that the connotations and usage can be different, but this is the only "ready-made" expression that has the same underlying meaning. It is important to include it here as an alternative for future reference searches with other contexts.

fece una scelta importante /decisiva

Explanation:
Non so, magari sto anche disimparando l'Italiano, ma mi pare che in questo caso, "take a leap of faith" stia per "fare una scelta decisiva in un campo molto importante". In Inglese si usa spesso
