Ma potrebbe essere "a nord (up) di Santa Cruz" o anche "non lontano, appena fuori da" - Dipende un po' dalla "geografia" del testo.
E poi non vedo il nesso fra linguistica e Santa Cruz, per questo la mia confidence è 100% sui possibili significati, e 0,7% sull'averci centrato ;-)
