Quello che, in uno studio clinico, come termine di paragone dell'efficacia del farmaco studiato, viene somministrato appunto al cosiddetto "gruppo di controllo", al quale spesso si somministra invece un placebo (ad es: acqua e zucchero).

In questo studio, evidentemente, il confronto è tra due farmaci anziché tra il farmaco studiato e il placebo.

Explanation:
In italiano si dice somministrare un placebo. In effetti mi sembra più corretta l’idealizzazione fatta in italiano piuttosto che in inglese, non vedo come possa considerarsi farmaco se non contiene medicine.
