Salve colleghi! Parlando di oggetti e gioielli antichi, trovo l'espressione in oggetto che non riesco a rendere adeguatamente in italiano. Un pò di contesto:"The tesserae were carefully and tightely arranged into the desired composition, then fused to the ground of the *mosaic plaque* by firing using similar skills used by enamellers...".

Ciao! Ti spiego i motivi del mio suggerimento un po' "vago"..
Nell'arte del mosaico ci sono una miriade di possibilità nella scelta nella base, che varia al contesto storico e al paese in cui si creavano i mosaici. Il testo in inglese che ci hai fornito non è stato molto chiaro nel citare uno dei supporti usati, quindi non me la sento di dare una traduzione precisa: la percentuale di sbagliare è troppo alta.
Io metterei base proprio per districarmi dalla possibilità di sbagliare a scegliere un termine tra tanti.
Ad esempio, si potevano usare vari impasti come supoporto come il calcestruzzo, il legno, il vetro, il compensato e moltissimi altri che variano in base a periodo storico e luogo.

Per darti comunque un'idea di questa grande varietà ti do' i due link di wikipedia cosi se sai il periodo storico giusto e il luogo, puoi scegliere il termine giusto.
