Ma, così, a memoria, 'scales' l'ho reso subito, letteralmente, con 'bilancia', indipendentemente dal contesto. Poi sono andato a controllare, trovando - to turn the scales = to change an expected outcome, mutare un esito scontato, previsto. [in fondo alla prima voce 'scale' (ve ne sono tre) del 'New Curcio-Webster's Dictionary of the English Language], altrimenti 'squama/e' o 'scala/e'. Ho fatto poi una ricerchina, volendo anche rinfrescare la memoria mitologico-filosofica, che ha corroborato la resa: "Platone chiamava 'Ananke' la madre delle Moire o Fati e stato il personfication di (inalterabile) la necessità o la forza di destino. Anche madre di Adrasteia (figlia di Giove e distributore di ricompense e punizioni). Dea della necessità inalterabile. Fu adorata fino all'avvento del culto Orfico. [tradotto dall'inglese al volo => http://www.pantheon.org/articles/a/ananke.html]" Quindi la frase, credo proprio di renderla con 'bilancia', nel senso di forza, ineluttabilità del destino, fato.
