English term or phrase: polygonal rotary press
Engravings that show presses at work from
the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries are virtually identical; the workplace
becomes slightly more opulent, the number of presses increases
– as does the number of compositors at work at the cases of type in
the background – but the design of the press remains the same. Then,
in 1799 the first all-iron press, using a system of compound levers, was
developed by Lord Stanhope and his engineer Robert Walker. From
then on changes are introduced at an ever-brisker pace. A high-speed
steam-powered press, invented by Friedrich Koenig (1774–1833) and the
watchmaker Andreas Bauer (1783–1860), was put into use on 29 November
1814 at The Times in London. The number of impressions that these
machines were capable of producing per hour increased through the use
of POLYGONAL ROTARY PRESS from 1,100 in 1814 to 12,000 by 1848.
In the late 1840s efficient circular rotary presses were invented.
