Non capisco cosa significhi la sigla in questo contesto, qualcuno può aiutarmi?

Maybe I should start with my own history with violence. It began in my early childhood , where I often felt as being between two fronts. On the one side was the German front, the German soldiers of the 1. WK: somewhat cold, confusing, ambivalent and near and far at the same time especially my Prussian grandfather, who often exhibited his WW1 wounds.
