English term or phrase: called its bluff

But in these fast-changing times, speaking at the 26th Congress of
International Publishers in 2000, Ferreiro, Professor at the Polytechnic
Institute of Mexico, reflected back on the European project of universal
literacy and in some sense called its bluff.

Italian translation:lo ha messo in dubbio
Explanation:

esempio

We must call the bluff of European governments and go straight back to work, because for our voters the price of legitimacy is open and ambitious reform, nothing less.
europarl.europa.eu

Example sentence(s):
  • To demand that someone prove a claim or is not being deceptive. | All right, I'll call your bluff. Show me you can do it! Tom said, "You've made me really angry, and I'll punch you if you come any closer!" "Go ahead," said Bill, calling his bluff.

ha in un certo senso svelato l'inghippo

Explanation:
