For their part, informants seemed to think that value was not fixed and was created by workers, but that once the productive stage was over, there was a fixed amount of it, so that profit was not extracted also in production, but through trading goods between parties as a zero-sum game.
This combination follows Marx’s emphasis on the primacy of the worker, but not his theory of surplus extraction in production.
I would suggest this is due to the fact that mercantilism’s zero-sum dynamic is by far more intuitive than Marx’s one of profit accruing through the capitalist’s purchase of the ** worker’s labour power **, and the control he thus gains also on the latter’s higher-yielding actual labour.

In Salario, prezzo, profitto del 1865 e nelle varie stesure del Capitale Marx perviene a una definizione più rigorosa, distinguendo forza-lavoro o capacità di lavoro ("l'insieme delle attitudini fisiche e intellettuali che esistono nella corporeità, ossia nella personalità vivente d'un uomo, e che egli mette in movimento ogni volta che produce valori d'uso di qualsiasi genere") e lavoro erogato, come processo di ricambio organico con la natura nelle varie forme storiche (manifattura, grande fabbrica ecc.). Tale distinzione prevede la separazione iniziale e sempre rinnovata (accumulazione originaria) fra lavoratore e mezzi di produzione, cioè il 'libero' rapporto salariale. Il salario è il prezzo della riproduzione della forza-lavoro. Questa è la differenza radicale con l’economia politica classica.
