agree  Masahiro Imafuji: 商品・サービスの売り上げから売上原価（cost of goods sold）を差し引いたものとされています。売上総利益。私はGross profit と習いましたが、Gross marginも同様の意味を持つようですが、ambiguousなフレーズとされているようです。

  -> そうですね。日本語でも「総利益」の意味はあいまいなので（粗利と同じ意味の時と全社、全事業というような意味の時があるので）、それと同じようなことかなと思います。
