Sustaining capital expenditures refers to expenditures in respect of capital asset additions, replacements or improvements required to maintain business operations at current production levels. Sustaining capital expenditures are typically financed from cash flow from operations, not debt, and are deducted in determining cash available for distribution as they are paid in cash. The timing and amount of capital expenditures incurred by Elk Valley Coal can vary considerably from quarter to quarter and from year to year, and will directly affect the amount of cash available for distribution to unitholders. Distributions to unitholders may be reduced, or even eliminated at times, when significant capital expenditures are incurred or other unusual expenditures are made.
