Explanation:
勝手な解釈になりそうですが。その人物の(上半身)の姿勢からなんとなく葬式写真を思わせるしぐさが感じられます。つまり、他の絵とか肖像とか、そして骸骨とかは死の普遍性を訴えるための小道具で、その人物もいつかその仲間入りということです。
この場合の「monument-like vertical of the person」は、現代風に訳せれば、「その正座した人物の遺影を思わせる格好」となるな感じですが。正座は少し行き過ぎて堅苦しいかな。

Asker: 早速のご提案ありがとうございます。この文のすぐ後に、A painter is sitting at a tableとありますので、少なくとも「突っ立って」の部分は変えなくてはなりません。原画をもう一度じっくりよく見ると、雑多な小物がテーブル上に広がっていて、言わば風景をを創っているわけですが、それに対して画家は、確かに縦方向に巨大に見えますね。その辺のところをうまく表現できればいいのかな、という気がしてきました。

Asker: 想像ですが、肖像画を描くときは大抵縦長のフォーマットで描くと思うのです。それに対して、この絵は横長ですから、そのことを風景画のフォーマットと言っているのではないかな、という気がします。今取り組んでいる本のテーマ自体が「自画像」ですから、このthe personは、やはり左に大きく描かれている画家自身(ただし若いときの)だと思います。

「landscape format」はズバリ「風景画」というよりも「風景画的な形式」くらいのほうが良さそうですね。横長でいろいろなものを映すパノラマ形式になってる、というくらいの意で。

1つめのリンクに興味深い記述がありました。
On the other hand, the entire collection functions as a statement about the young man on the left, whose face displays the typical features of a self-portrait. It may therefore be somewhat irritating that the artist was in fact 67 years old when he painted this picture in 1651.
However, the contradiction can be solved when we consider that his current features are shown in the small oval portrait, demonstratively held out towards the viewer
