English term or phrase: churn
I know "churn" means "customers switching from one provider to another provider," but in the following sentences, which is extracted from Description column of a table which describes file servers, it seems to have a different meaning.
Does these "churn" mean "processing" or something else?
--------------------
1)“Average” amount of churn with most activity at quarter end. This server has about 100 regular users.

2) Lots of churn, definitely the most active of the file servers

I also found the following two sets of sentences on the Web which might be helpful:

One management cost area where Linux seems to
consistently trump Windows is the cost of managing
security. A big driver for Cedars-Sinai’s switch
to Linux was “the tremendous **amount of churn** we
have on our NT servers,” due to hot fixes,
service packs, and so on, Duncan says. “We did an
analysis of the amount of time we were spending
tweaking NT servers, and it really was kind of
terrifying. We should be able to set up a server
and just leave it alone ? we really got into Linux
from that point of view.”

In the version which supports snapshots, I plan to alter the way the server works. The chains of patches will be kept, but will be managed outside the directory structure. Also, the responsibility for managing the directories will lie with the client so that they can be signed (and also reduce the **amount of churn** on the server when uploading lots of files into a directory.)

チャーン
Explanation:
just a guess

churn

Another word for turnover. For example, "It is said that about forty percent of U.S. job growth is in IT and that those in the industry change jobs on average every eighteen months, amounting to an increasingly high churn rate, compared with past decades." This term also means to produce something at a fast pace but with mediocre results, as in, "Some of those incubators thought that just by pooling office space and resources, they could churn out McStartups by the dozens. Boy, were they wrong."

Thank you for your answer. I couldn't figure out the exact meaning, so I decided to translate it as "チャーン," because it works for almost any context (at least it cannot be absolutely wrong).

空回りする・かき回す

Explanation:
As Eijiro's sample sentences attest, churn generally has a negative connotation--Shakespeare's "sound and fury, signifying nothing."--in this case, hard disk heads running to and fro, not doing productive work. Even worse is "thrashing."

Explanation:
it means the same as regular marketing "churn" but with an IT perspective of how this churn affects system performance and capacity planning.

Explanation:
Table may be refering to a churn behavior.

http://www.usenix.org/event/usenix04/tech/general/rhea/rhea_...
This paper addresses the problem of churn--the continuous process of node arrival and departure--in distributed hash tables (DHTs). We argue that DHTs should perform lookups quickly and consistently under churn rates at least as high as those observed in deployed P2P systems such as Kazaa. We then show through experiments on an emulated network that current DHT implementations cannot handle such churn rates.
