原文ではちゃんと説明されているので、蛇足かも知れませんが、50年代より建設されているinterstate highway systemのお陰で、高速道路という直線ルートの並びに、ゆっく景色を楽しみながら行けるscenic route(つまり旧道)ができました。

一般道でも、学校や買物から直帰しないで、回り道、寄り道、道草をしながら帰るをtake the scenic routeという。
