アメリカでは一流の中学、高校、大学に入るためにすさまじい競争が繰り広げられています。今回は受験に関する言葉で混同しがちな「挑戦校」と「チャレンジスクール」について説明します。日本語でよく「挑戦校」「適正校」「堅実校・安全校・押さえ・滑り止め」という言葉が使われますが、英語にもこれと同様の発想の言葉が存在します。

「挑戦校・難関校」

(意味:自分の実力ではやや合格が難しいと思われる学校、あるいは、誰にとっても入るのが難しい学校)

=> a reach school

「適正校」

(意味:自分の実力に一番適している学校)

=> a match school

「堅実校・安全校・押さえ・滑り止め」

(意味:自分の実力ではまず不合格になることはない学校)

=> a safety school

英語では a reach school, a match school, a safety school という3つの言葉が使われます。ここで注意しなくてはならないのは「挑戦校」に当たる英語は a reach school であると言うことです。間違えても「挑戦校」という意味で a challenge school という言葉を使わないようにしてください。英語にも a challenge school という言葉はありますが、 a challenge school の意味は「挑戦校」とは全く異なります。a challenge school という言葉は「非行・登校拒否などの問題を持つ生徒や学力が極端に劣る生徒を救済するための学校」を指します。要するに日本語でいう「落ちこぼれ校」のことを a a challenge school と言います。

東京都には「チャレンジスクール」と呼ばれる公立高校が何校かありますが、これは英語の a challenge school をそのままカタカナにして使ったものです。

英語の a reach school には「挑戦校」という意味に加えて「(入りたくても難しくてなかなか入れない)難関校」という意味も含まれています。

「私にとってあの学校は挑戦校(難関校)です。」と言おうとして

と言ったら全く違う意味になってしまうということはもうお分かりのことと思います。正しくは、

になります。
