Practicing lawyers may in the future support practical skills training in law school by taking a candidate’s having taken simulation-based courses while in law school.

I'm currently reviewing translation done by someone else and not quite sure what the author says by the above sentence. I assume this may not be a typical expression to refer to the same thing.

Specifically, could any one here provide any idea on a possible meaning of this first "taking" in the above phrase? Could it be rephrased as "hiring" or "adopting"?

To Susan さん: 私が思った点ですが、専門の本を何冊も書かれている人であるならば、文章表現に関してはおよそ相応の高い意識を持たれているのではないか、と想像したまででした。（人間、それは名誉教授といえどもそれは間違えることもあるでしょう（笑）。）ちなみに、グランドコンサイス英和の定義では、「lawyering （しばしば軽蔑的）法の施行、法慣習、弁護士業、弁護士の手腕」とあります。Kathy さんのご指摘と一致しているようです。

名誉教授だから間違った英語は書かないとはいえません。引用に関する限りおかしいところだらけです。またlawyering というのも滅多に聞かない表現です。なおご存知でしょうが名誉教授というと特別名誉ある仕事をした普通の教授以上のように感じますが、ただ教授職になってから退職したというだけのことです。あまり過大評価しないほうがいいのでは?なお私の回答はtakingというあなたの質問に向けていませんのでとりさげました。間違った英語を訳さなければならないのは時には辛いですね。

全文をお見せできないのが残念ですが、これは「Raising Good Lawyers: The Japanese Law School Ideal and Simulation-Based Clinical Education」という題のシンポジウムのレジュメで、日本におけるシミュレーション形式の教育展開が議題となっています。lawyering という語は幾度が出ており、「ロースクールでのスキルの実践すること」のような意味です。著者の Paul Bergman 氏はブルックリン生まれのアメリカ人のようです。http://www.law.ucla.edu/home/index.asp?page=426

Lawyeringというのも変です。確かにおかしな英語です。名誉教授とかなんとかいう方々にもいろいろおつきあいさせていただきましたが、英語が第二国語というひとも大勢います。ただ私の考えは以前と変わりません。在学中のトレーニングのことをいっていますから。

Can's right, the English is a little odd, but in this case I think you rewrite it as "by taking (employing) a candidate that has taken...."

Well, I tended to doubt so, but the writer is a Professor of Law Emeritus at UCLA, authoring many law books. This is just what I'm given as source.

This article is about simulation and crinical education at law schools. For your reference, here is the whole paragraph including the sentence:

Lawyers’ Hiring Decisions. Practicing lawyers may in the future support practical skills training in law school by taking a candidate’s having taken simulation-based courses while in law school. If students know that this is a factor that may affect their job search, they may be more likely to enroll in such courses.

を書き換えると:

In the future, practicing lawyers (開業弁護士) may support [the implementation of] practical skills-training [courses] at law school [because it can be anticipated that they (the future employERs) will give preference to] candidates (これって　candidates for employmentのことを言ってます） that have taken simulation-based courses whilst [they were students] in law school.

<If students know that this is a factor that may affect their job search, they may be more likely to enroll in such courses.>
これはこのままで十分わかりやすいと思いますが、言い換えると:
If students realized that _this_ (ie. having completed this kind of simulation-based skills-training course) could potentially make them more attractive as candidates for employment (and thus much easier for them to get a job), then they might be more likely to enroll in such courses.

Asker: この「simulation-based education」ですが、米国では行われてきた歴史はかなりあり、日本では最近取り入れられ始めたものということです。ロースクールでどのようにそれを展開するかということがテーマですが、従来の法原理教育も形態はシミュレーションをとっており、より実践的なスキル（書類作成、交渉、クライアントの代理など）を対象とするシミュレーション教育はその専門教育の延長である、というような内容になっています。ここは Lawyers’ Hiring Decisions についてのまとめなので可能性はありますが、taking をそのまま「採用」といってしまっていいのかまだ少し迷っています。
