whales ホエール Explanation: There is no right answer for this. One thing we have to consider is the translation for the other 4 categories. I would translate them as ミノー、フィッシュ、ドルフィン and キラーホエール、so that minnows and fish can be distinguished from each other. 小魚 is still 魚. So I would avoid using 小魚 and 魚 for minnows and fish respectively. Then, I would just use romaji for everything. |

whales クジラ Explanation: The terms you should use are depending on the ages of target players and whether it highlights fishing as a sport or not . The translated Japanese meanings of minnows include alot of nuances. Minnow should sometimes be translated into a proper noun as ヒメハヤ(Himehaya) or etc., but sometimes it is translated into common noun as 小魚(kozakana=small fish), or 雑魚(zako=small fish which becomes the bait of the fishing), and also "雑魚(zako)" is sometime used as disparaging word to some weaker person, enemies, etc. So I think 雑魚 should not used due to not educational, but 小魚、魚、シャチ、クジラ are suitable for children, young people, or old people to play the game. Many Japanese tend to think that whales are often bigger than killer whales, but killer whales are fiercer than whales. It might be one of the elements of the game. |

whales クジラ (or 鯨) Explanation: In Japanese, killer whale and whale are very different words where killer whale is シャチ, and whale is クジラ or 鯨 in kanji. Since I think whales are much more commonly known by Japanese people, I would use クジラ (or 鯨), unless you need to be very precise about literary meaning of killer whale. I think the kanji 鯨 is also widely understandable. As for minnows, msbtbw explained well, but I may translate as メダカ. Precisely, this is killifish but I think it is one of the most popular minnows and any Japanese people can recognize easily. Overall, for Minnows, Fish, Dolphins, Killer Whales, I would translate as メダカ、魚、イルカ、クジラ (or 鯨). In case the game is for small kinds, all words could also be in hiragana instead. |
