皆様に感謝です。プルーフリーディングなのですが、他にも意訳が多いのですが何だか自信を持って意訳を使っているフシがありましたのでお尋ねしました。この箇所はあまりに原文とかけ離れているので直しましたが他の、内容を読む人に理解しやすいようにするのが目的と思われる箇所は、エージェントには「客先の判断に任せる」とコメントしました。フォーラム向きの質問だったかも知れません。

I'm so sick of Japanese web sites that insist that I write my name in 全角文字(名奈戸･欲苦？), my address numerals in 全角文字 (４－３０－１０), and my telephone number in *半角*.
I cynically use 想定外 instead of 使用不可能 or 受け付けられない because this message usually indicates a programmer too lazy or too ignorant to cope—e.g., by filtering out spaces and hyphens from credit card numbers, for example.

What are "special" characters? Which characters ARE allowed? In my credit card example, the illegal (the preferred programming/syntax term) characters are common, everyday space and hyphen.

The one good point to the lazy Japanese approach is that the programmer usually has enough presence of mind to say 全角のみ or 半角のみ
