Of course 'non' goes with the verb, but in both examples the sense is that of denying the whole clause. Let's analyse: Non (mea gratia familiaritatitibus continentur) = Not (my credit is confined to my close relatives) => It is not true that my credit is confined to my close relatives. Precisely the fact of being at the beginning makes the 'non' to affect the whole sentence. As you know, word order is sometimes critical in Latin, as in this case. To obtain your English interpretation (and Joseph's, in his former disagree), Latin should read: 'Somnium non est nimium magnum'. |
