A type of birthmark that can appear anywhere on a child’s body, most frequently on the lower back or buttocks. These dark pigmented areas usually fade by age five, and are seen most often in African-American, Hispanic, Oriental, and Native American babies.

Klasiska lokalizācija ir lumbosakrālais rajons un gluteālā rajona iekšējā (mediālā) zona. Parasti Mongoļu plankums ir viens atsevišķs veidojums, bet aprakstīti gadījumi, kad veidojums parādās kā multipas makulas. Tas ir makulas veida bojājums ar apaļu, ovālu vai stūrainu formu; dažus veidojumus pārklāj mati. Izmērs variē no dažiem centimetriem līdz pat 20 cm un vairāk. Parasti Mongoļu plankumam ir vāji noteiktas robežas, taču lielākiem veidojumiem raksturīgi būt labāk norobežotiem. Krāsa variē no vienmērīgi gaiši zilas līdz pelēkai; tumšākas krāsas indivīdiem no tēraudzilas līdz pelēki – zaļai.Mongoļu plankumi redzami jau jaundzimušajiem vai arī parādās pirmajās dzīves nedēļās; Vienādi bieži skar gan sievietes, gan vīriešus. Veidojums parasti regresē agrā bērnībā, bet var pastāvēt visu mūžu. Mongoļu plankuma hiperpigmentācija ir saistīta ar melanocītu atrašanos dermas vidējā līdz apakšējā slānī tādēļ, ka tie nav sasnieguši epidermu embrioģenēzes laikā, migrējot no nervu kores. Melanocīti dermā parādās desmitajā grūtniecības nedēļā, uz epidermu sāk migrēt turpmāko četru nedēļu laikā un no dermas pazūd pēc divdesmitās nedēļas. Piedzimstot melanocīti atrodami tikai skalpa rajonā, roku un pēdu dorsālajā virsmā un sakrālajā zonā. Sakrālais rajons ir visbiežākā vieta, kur parādās Mongoļu plankums.
