Satu cabang sains komputer yang membolehkan komputer mensimulasi aspek kecerdasan manusia seperti pengecaman suara, deduksi, inferens, respons kreatif, kebolehan belajar daripada pengalaman dan kebolehan membuat inferens apabila diberi maklumat yang tidak lengkap. Dua bidang penyelidikan kecerdasan buatan yang lazim ialah sistem pakar dan pemprosesan bahasa tabii. Konsep kecerdasan buatan dibina oleh Alan Turing pada tahun 1950. Beliau menggunakan istilah kecerdasan komputer. Konsep ini dinamakan semula sebagai kecerdasan buatan oleh John Mc Carty pada tahun 1955. Antara aplikasi kecerdasan buatan terawal ialah atur cara komputer yang boleh bermain catur. Atur cara ini telah digunakan untuk mengalahkan juara catur dunia Anatoly Karpov.
