Discussion

MY Lim Oct 5, 2013:
To noraesyiataff3 Alternatively, I’m thinking we could stick with “khas”—as in a regular shower enclosure would be “bilik mandi pancuran” and a walk-in shower would be “bilik mandi pancuran khas.” In this case, it wouldn’t be an exact translation but I think we have established that the direct translation of “walk-in” doesn’t translate well to Malay. And a walk-in shower is after all a special (“khas”) shower area.

Your thoughts, please? Thanks very much again.
MY Lim Oct 5, 2013:
To noraesyiataff3 Hi noraesyiataff3. Thank you so much for your thoughts :)
I think there’s a need to distinguish between a normal shower enclosure (<a> http://bit.ly/178rmFl</a>, <a> http://bit.ly/191bF6A</a> ) and a walk-in shower (<a> http://bit.ly/178r3Kp</a>, <a>http://bit.ly/17FbFc0</a> , <a> http://bit.ly/179pxXx</a> ), because a walk-in shower is wider and more accessible compared to a normal, smaller shower enclosure. A walk-in shower also usually doesn’t have a barrier at its entrance, and is more easily accessed by handicapped guests ( <a>http://bit.ly/192x0KR</a> ) when equipped with additional facilities for the handicapped.
I do however acknowledge that “bilik mandi pancuran yang luas” might not be the best way to phrase it (I’m not a native speaker of Malay and I only translate into English :-). I do welcome your suggestions on a more appropriate translation to convey the distinction between a regular shower enclosure and walk-in shower.
Norazilinah Ingram Aug 24, 2013:
Sometimes there are both in one bathroom like the questioner indicated. A separate shower room (walk-in shower) and a bath tub. Usually in a deluxe room hotel or houses with big bath room.
Norazilinah Ingram Aug 24, 2013:
There is a different between a walk-in shower and bathroom with a bath tub especially nowadays the bathrooms are so modernize not just in hotel even in homes. The walk-in shower usually is small area that you can walk-in (without a bathtub) and obviously has a shower sometimes it has its own sliding door to separate the area from the toilet. Of course every bathroom will have a door to separate from any other room. It goes without saying. Unless we are in boot camp, jail or in gym where the shower is in big open room. (shared by many). That is what the definition meant here as in 'walk-in' shower in this case. Its not open. Its a shower room without a bath tub.
When you have bath tub, you have a choice to take a bath or shower. Usually close by a shower curtain.

Bilik Mandi

Because of Bath room is the tradition and part of it has been changed to modernized style of bath, shower, steam bath the general definition is still a room where someone is taking a bath or cleaning him/herself.

http://ms.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilik_mandi
In Malay culture a place to clean, freshen up for shower or bath is all related <br />to the definition of &#039;Bilik Mandi&#039;.<br /><br />There is no different definition for shower or bath and the definition is enough to describe <b>walk in shower</b>. <br /><br /><b>Bilik</b> in Malay - Room in English<br /><b>Mandi</b>in Malay - Shower or Bath in English <br /><br />bilik mandi ruang tempat mandi (membuang air, membasuh dll);<br />Shower or Bath room is an area for cleaning, using toilet (if attached) or shower/ bath.
Example sentences:
Ali got up from bed and went straight to the bath/shower room. (Pusat Rujukan Persuratan Melayu)
Note from asker:
Hi. In malaysia, 'walk-in interview' is translated as 'temuduga terbuka' just because it means that one does not to make an appointment, instead she can walk straight into 'it'.Would 'bilik mandi terbuka' (as is 'walk-in wardrobe' which by definition is another space in a room built without a door..) be "odd" though?
Peer comment(s):

agree Jamilah Zainol Abidin : Yes, I would agree that walk-in shower just mean "bilik mandi" in Malay no matter how they describe it, unless it a separate public bathroom, then it would be "bilik mandi awam" atau "tandas awam" (public toilet).

Bilik mandi pancuran yang luas

On the usage of the word "shower" (pancuran mandi) instead of "bathroom" (bilik mandi):
As someone who worked in hospitality and an avid traveller myself, I would say that it is very important that the room information provided conveys the distinction between "shower" and "bath". This is because some guests prefer to have a separate shower and tub within the same bathroom, and these facilities affect room pricing.

On the usage of "yang luas":
Instead of attempting to directly translate the term "walk-in", perhaps we should try to convey the notion of spaciousness?

Just my two cents. Perhaps native speakers of Malay could offer suggestions on how to better word this.

Note from asker:
Sharon :-) we thought of "Bilik Mandi Pancuran Khas" .. to say that it's a bathroom, with a shower cubicle on its own.
Dear Sharon, it's our pleasure really (my niece) :) your explanation actually did it all!
Sharon you're right about how "walk-in" does not translate well into Malay. I wish though, that we could 'coin' a proper phrase in Malay for it...just like how "Walk-in Interview" is 'properly phrased <b>Temuduga Terbuka</b> in Malay , instead of a sentence :)

Pancuran Terbuka

Walk-in Shower juga tidak semestinya "without any barriers at its entrance".
Definition from own experience or research:
Definisi<br /><br />1. Walk-in - masuk: theres no need to knock. Just ~ in, tdk perlu ketuk. Masuk sajalah.<br />Frasa &#039;Walk-in&#039; digunakan untuk mentakrif maksud laluan tanpa halangan fizikal, dibenarkan untuk terus masuk.<br />Contoh: Temuduga Terbuka (Walk-in Interview) tidak memerlukan calon membuat temujanji, sekadar mematuhi jadual temuduga dijalankan.<br /><br /><b><a href="http://prpm.dbp.gov.my/Search.aspx?k=Walk-in" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://prpm.dbp.gov.my/Search.aspx?k=Walk-in</a></b><br /><br />2. Shower - Hujan (bath in which one stands under running water) mandi hujan: dia berasa segar semula selepas mandi hujan; /take, have/ a ~, mandi hujan: I usually take a cold ~ each morning before breakfast, saya selalunya mandi hujan air sejuk setiap hari sebelum sarapan; <br />Semasa awal pengenalannya, ia lebih dikenali sebagai paip mandian &#039;air hujan&#039; kerana sifatnya menyerupai hujan turun.
