With glutamate being the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain, a complex system exists to protect neurons ffom excitotoxic destruction. This consists of the glutamate transport proteins excitatory amino acid transporter (EAAT) 1-5, glutamate dehydrogenase, and glutamate decarboxylase. Also involved is the glutamate/cystine Xc-antiporter. The latter is involved in glutamate exchange, with the intracellular movement of cystine used in glutathione synthesis.

CySS może być pobierana przez komórki glejowe za pośrednictwem dwóch typów transporterów. Pierwszym znich jest antyporter cystynowo-glutaminianowy xc~. Jest to heterodimer złożony z łańcucha lekkiego (xCT) oraz łańcucha ciężkiego (4F2hc) [Sato i wsp., 1999], przyczym wykazano, że koekspresja obydwu podjednostek jest niezbędna do jego
aktywności [Bassi i wsp., 2001; Gochenauer i Robinson, 2001]. Transporter ten, działając zgodnie z gradientem stężeń, przenosi CySS do komórki (gdzie jej stężenie jest niskie, a stężenie Glu - wysokie), zaś Glu do przestrzeni pozakomórkowej (gdzie proporcja stężeń tych dwóch aminokwasów jest odwrotna) .
