Zależy od kontekstu (styl, dokładne znaczenie). Zależenie od kontekstu, mogłoby też być n.p. "cicha woda" (jeśli ktoś pozytywnie zaskoczył nas czymś spektakularnym i w odniesieniu do tej sytuacji używamy "diamond in the rough"). I prawdopodobnie wiele innych tłumaczeń.
