People who know him well say Vojislav Kostunica is shy and lazy, with little charisma and few communication skills. He is a political loner; critics used to call his organization a "van party," claiming that all of its members could fit into a single vehicle. In a country steeped in machismo, Kostunica's opponents gleefully point out that he has two pet cats but never fathered any children. Even so, he could well be Yugoslavia's next president. Looking at the opinion polls, it's hard to see how Kostunica can lose the presidential election, scheduled for a first round on Sept. 24. But many Yugoslavs find it even harder to believe that his main opponent, President Slobodan Milosevic, will allow him to win.
