Reference: Perverse Incentives Reference information: Most employees want to make a positive contribution and do the best they can for themselves, the company and society. Unfortunately, many companies have incentives such that employees benefit by undermining long-term value for the company. Only an exceptional person can resist perverse incentives for long. Some companies institute fixed budgets as a way of controlling costs. Under this system, profitable opportunities are often missed as managers reject profitable proposals that would cause their budgets to be exceeded. It is also common for a company to attempt to reduce costs by ordering an across-the-board 10 percent reduction in budgets or people. This practice usually results in removing profitable expenditures and people along with unprofitable ones, tending to make the company less rather than more profitable. Both approaches create perverse incentives. Perverse incentives are common in company/employee (principal/agent) relationships, and are known as an agency problem. http://my.safaribooksonline.com/book/management/978047013988...
