In addition to the Contracting States, States may also conclude a cooperation agreement with the EPO, known as an extension agreement. The state then becomes "extension state", which means European patents granted by the EPO may be extended to those countries by the payment of additional fees and completion of certain formalities. The following 3 states have concluded extension agreements with the EPO, so that in effect, these states can be designated as well in a European patent application: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. Among these three extension states, Serbia and Albania have been formally invited by the Administrative Council to accede to the EPC. In addition, San Marino has also been invited to accede to the EPC.
