English term or phrase: rugged
Here, at an altitude of ca. 2,000 meters, near the Monte Tamaro, he asked the architect to build a chapel in memory of his late wife. With its uninterrupted view over the valley of Lugano, this is one of the most spectacular works of contemporary European architecture. Its RUGGED POWER is defined not only by its strong forms, but also by its unusual cladding of rusticated porphyry. The whole is completed by a group of frescoes by the Italian painter Enzo Cucchi, who seems to have been very much in tune with the spiritual nature of the architect’s scheme. Both the chapel itself and its decor
are indisputably modern, and yet they also appear to spring from much older forms.
